A fifteen-year-old boy goes to work as a waiter at a fancy summer resort and antics ensue. At least, that's how the get-go half of the book reads. Complete with Eugene falling in beloved with the older, afar, gorgeous waitress only because she's beautiful. Complete with waitress'southward horrible, bruny boyfriend tormenting Eugene. And I thought, actually, Paul Zindel? You're writing a bad 80'south teen comedy? Even though I was a massive fan of Paul Zindel when I was a tween in the 1970s and still relish his classics such as 'The Pigman', this one seemed to exist an imitation and a poor ane at that of ' The Diary of Adrien Mole age xiii three/4 ' past Sue Townsend.

I do not think this book will appeal to the tweens of today, it is fairly dated.

Basically, the book was as the title stated, the diary of Eugene Dingman. Eugene was pretty cool, rather precocious, but he liked expert books so I can forgive him that. Too, he was very unrealistic almost love, go figure. Average book, nothing too bad, nothing too wonderful.

The most disappointing of Paul Zindel's books. But a fiddling too cynical without whatever really sympathetic characters and a flimsy plot

In some ways, this volume is the "anti-YA" YA novel, and I say that in reference to the notion that YA fiction is usually almost "understanding" something. I should mention that Zindel isn't clean of trying to "understand" his boyish readers ("Read Paul Zindel" says a Bantam advertisement for his various works "he understands you"). Nonetheless, the narrator comes to the conclusion* that one cannot fully understand another person. *This is by no means a spoiler. This conclusion is one of many that he reaches.

I enjoyed reading Amazing and Death Defying Diary of Eugene Dingman. I felt it was a realistic account of a young adult male person's ups and downs, hopes and dreams, and expressions of self-incertitude. Journaling by means of a diary is a healthy manner to communicate and reflect. Today, social networking seems to be the periodical of choice. Paul Zindel was an American author, playwright and educator.

In 1964, he wrote The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, his get-go and most successful play. The play ran off-Broadway in 1970, and on Broadway in 1971. It won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Information technology was likewise fabricated into a 1972 movie by 20th Century Fox. Charlotte Zolotow, then a vice-president at Harper & Row (at present Harper-Collins) contacted him to writing for her volume label. Zindel wrote 39 books, all of them aimed at children or immature adults. Many of these were set in his home town of Staten Island, New York. They tended to be semi-autobiographical, focusing on teenage misfits with abusive or neglectful parents. Despite the oftentimes dark discipline matter of his books, which deal with loneliness, loss, and the furnishings of abuse, they are also filled with humor. Many of his novels have wacky titles, such as My Darling, My Hamburger, or Confessions of A Teenage Baboon.

The Pigman, first published in 1968, is widely taught in American schools, and also made information technology on to the listing of nearly frequently banned books in America in the 1990s, because of what some deem offensive language.
